The Renegade Bus
You have to love the Renegade Bus story (links here and here). After Katrina hit and New Orleans was going to hell, a young man named Jabbar Gibson came across a school bus abandoned in the street. He commandeered it (or stole it, take your pick), packed it full of 99 stragglers--including an eight day old infant--and headed off for the Astrodome in Houston.
On the trip the riders pooled their money to buy gas and pampers for the kid. After a long, hard ride they reached the Astrodome where--predictably--they were turned away. Apparently the facility was being reserved for "official" hurricane refugees. At some point the lack of logic of this position sunk in on the Astrodome officials (or maybe, somebody looked at this pathetic bunch who had just spent seven hours in a bus after escaping from a drowned city and said "what the hell"). Anyway, the group led by Mr. Gibson was allowed inside, the first to reach the safety of this shelter.
Anyway, hats off to Jabbar Gibson, who had never driven a bus before but who found himself in a tough spot and did the right thing.
Hat tip to Ms. Malkin for the story.

lol. This is great. If only the msm would get off their...well, they have job to do, don't ya know? Destroy President Bush at all cost, no matter if it is human. They disgust me.
Good job, Gibson!

Petition to honor Jabbar Gibson
http://www.petitiononline.com/JG0007Q/petition.html
"We have been extraordinarily moved by the story of Jabbar Gibson, and the initiative he displayed in commandeering a bus to drive Hurricane Katrina victims out of New Orleans. We were very alarmed to hear that he was at one time in danger of prosecution. Mr. Gibson declared to the news media, "I don’t care if I get blamed for it, as long as I saved my people." But WE care if he gets blamed for it."
[snip]
" We request that this young man be awarded appropriately with a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a full four-year scholarship to the college of his choice. For we truly believe that Jabbar Gibson as an individual, exemplified the courage and the spirit that is the best part of America and in so doing became emblematic of the actions many others who responded bravely and selflessly in the face of this disaster. He is someone we should support, encourage, and see prosper in this great nation. Jabbar Gibson and those like him are the future of America!"
